Annual Christmas Daddies Telethon around the corner
November 19, 2003 – (Halifax) —
On Sunday December 7, 2003 ATV/CTV will host the 40th Annual Christmas Daddies Telethon from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This uniquely Maritime telethon raises funds to provide clothing, food and gifts to underprivileged children and their families during the holidays.
“We’re really excited about this year’s guests, Canadian Idol runner-up Gary Beals and CTV veteran news reporter Mike Duffy,” said Roxanne Robinson, the Executive Director for the Mainland telethon. “We think this year’s show will be better than ever.”
The Christmas Daddies Telethon has been a tradition since 1964 when a group of ATV/CTV employees were prompted to raise money for a desperate child they found begging in a local drinking establishment. That first telethon raised $1,500. Since then, Christmas Daddies has raised more than $20 million with an impressive pledge rate of 100 per cent. Last year alone, more than 10,000 children were helped as a result of the telethon. Funds are distributed through The Salvation Army and are returned to the area from which they are donated.
During the broadcast, Aliant provides their Customer Contact Centre facility and more than 300 Aliant Pioneer Volunteers to answer the more than 5,000 calls to the telethon. ATV/CTV donates technical equipment and airtime for the event while employees, families and friends volunteer to produce the program.
Two simultaneous broadcasts, one from Halifax/Moncton and one from Sydney, reach all Maritime Provinces and showcase great talent from around the region.
